no, i don't actually have an uncontrollable urge to exterminate teenage girls
Hi, i can be boring sometimes. And i often sound evil to conceal life's banalities. But i really am a kind and peace-loving creature. That despite the URL. |

![]() this season, survivor's been a madcap crazy ride from start to finish. one that got me eating up every single crazy move and replaying tribal councils one after another. never mind the nagging suspicions if these were scripted, or indeed the feisty sparks that ensue when you throw the heroic and villainous into the mix. i love survivor, even while knowingly manipulated by its crafty editing and the caricatures it carves out of the players. to me, survivor encompasses two things we tired souls perpetually seek - fantasy and escapism. i dare say the characters (or caricatures if you will) we root for are in a twisted sense, a reflection of the state of being we secretly wish to embody in real life. that of course, always remains an unrequited fantasy, and the irony of it all is that we more often than not end up hating on such characters in real life! the human mind is such an enigma. while droves of fans liked russell enough to crown him the player of the season, surely these very russ adorers would balk at the idea of having a real russell in the midst of their existence, and to have to deal with his cut throat deviousness in reality? he would have been universally despised and alienated! parvati, with her cheerleader giggle complete with a raspy purr, looks like she just walked out of a bitchy sorority house and owns 10 burn books at home, and would have been, in reality, a major watercooler gossip subject that every plain jane would love to hate and every hormonal boy would die to date (while too, bitching about how tough she is to bed). yet people have been campaigning for her and rallying against her unjust defeat survivor is in essence, office politics glamorized with big personalities and with cool challenges thrown in the mix. the ones thrown under the bus bemoan the dirtiness and dishonour of it all, while those who emerge victorious do so only at the expense of peers whose throats they've had to cut. but who doesn't want the upper hand in the game of office politics? people who make themselves look like extremely pitiful victims are likely the ones being compromised, and also at least a wee bit hypocritical. well, these are the very people who would root for a weasel like russell or a flirty siren like parvati in the game of survivor. survivor's a great social and psychological experiment that very importantly, also happens to be extremely entertaining. there's a little bit of everyone in every castaway. this season, i think i awakened to a subversive part of me that aspires to be a social butterfly open to mischief and debauchery once in a blue moon (a "pet" on leash would be an added bonus, for sure). of course, we all know that is never going to happen. and no, i'm not contemplating going under the knife in the name of that aspiration, in case you're worrying. i don't care if you think i'm a lifeless geek, but what would fridays be like without heroes vs villains?! |
