am finally clearing the dust off this semi-abandoned space and getting down to gathering some of my thoughts for the last month and a half. well, school started, and life's been generally idyllic. go ahead and pour scorn over me, school-haters, but honestly, montrosity that took the form of jc studies really helps put things in perspective. gone are the days i awoke to the depressing darkness of dawn and unthinkingly memorized chunks of notes over a 2 year long clockwork routine. simple priviledges like being able to wake up at 12 noon on good days make a world of difference. and, the beauty of webcasts! feigned rara CCA enthusiasm are also a thing of the past, and no more holy disciplinarians perenially peeking over your shoulder! honestly, what's there to bitch about?

am really looking forward to SEP in a year's time or two. time to take a step out of the comfort zone and venture into the unfamiliar, i figure. in the meantime, it'll probably be useful to go learn a basic culinary survival skill or two. to master the art of cooking rice without instantly turning it into watery porridge, to say the least.

the hotly anticipated picture of the year didn't disappoint. it was a sweet, cathartic celebration of the different faces of love, in all its lovey-dovey, cliched, mundane, convoluted and tumultuous glory. how pleasant it was, to see this sweet little picture confront our insecurities and weaknesses with such refreshing candour and honesty.

this movie is at heart, an ode to the losers of the world who have ever invested much more in someone than he/she could ever return. how much subservience and ego-bashing can one bear before attaining enlightnment and moving on? where is the place for romantically constructed expectations in the boring realm of reality?

i love that the movie almost makes a mockery of love, and how we humans, we insecure, indecisive, wavering creatures, realize the foolishness of our half-baked ideals only after hurting someone or ourselves. that the heart of the movie is nearly the anti-thesis of romance, as ST puts it, makes the film essential watching for the average joe who's gotten his heart broken one too many times by the pretty girl in class, the film snob who scoffs at the impracticality of glitzy onscreen romances and the free spirits who gladly adhere by that label, if only for the license to not commit that they're almost automatically allowed.

its indie excesses, if i can even refer to its non-linear narrative structure and highly stylized scenes as that, fortunately never feel superfluous. in what more creative and unspoken ways can you express the exhiliration of getting laid for the first time than this?

yes, he dances and hallucinates about a blue bird after getting laid.

and duh, having adorable leads with man-boy charisma, pixie faces and piercing blue eyes don't hurt either.

and speaking of getting laid, that is one thing that will not happen to me when i visit amsterdam in netherlands at the end of the year! that despite the avalanche of window whores that i expect to see as i stroll down the city (in)famous for its tolerance and diversity (arguably a euphemism for window whores and condom museums, really) but other than that, all transgressions are very much looked forward to - each and every spectacle in de hallen (amsterdam's RLD) that leave tourists in awe, and also nothing to the imagination. but for every marijuana vending machine, i guess there's always a docile rotating windmill nearby, so i think we'll try to balance out the cultural and the sexual, the historic and the pornographic ;) can't wait. dumbest (but not guilty) pleasure of the moment: staring at my electronic air ticket that has "singapore changi" and "amsterdam schiphol" printed on the same page.
the hague and paris also on the cards. romantic cities with platonic friends, sounds like my idea of coolness!

it feels so surreal, almost like a last minute flood or street demonstration by whores will threaten to derail our lofty plans and make a fool of our romanticized notions of the city.

but in the meantime i'll cling onto my electronic ticket (hug the computer screen maybe) and just bask in the sweet sweet allure of amsterdam's beckoning red, i mean, night lights as i make a mad dash for exams and assorted deadlines in the last six weeks of the semester.

till then.
