no, i don't actually have an uncontrollable urge to exterminate teenage girls
Hi, i can be boring sometimes. And i often sound evil to conceal life's banalities. But i really am a kind and peace-loving creature. That despite the URL. |

life has been rather kind to me of late. after what seemed like a disastrous interview peppered more with embarrassingly frivolous confessions of a cinephile than witty insights into the world of journalism, they amazingly gave me the green light to go ahead with a 6-month long internship. one that will be pivotal in determining my career path, financial health, and personal worth alike in the years to come. and after i've come to terms with how they could have bought my near-nonsensical, faux-intellectual rambings about euthanasia ("我觉得死得有尊严最重要。" was my exact quote), it was time to put things into perspective and set the expectations right for the next half a year to come. for starters, i've been posted to OMY (it's alright, nobody's gonna call you a mountain tortoise for drawing a blank - head over to www.omy.sg - it's like the chinese version of stomp, but a tad less trashy). i cannot, and have no wish to deny the initial disappointment of not being posted to the print press, but all things happen for a reason, and this can probably be traced to some of the interview gaffes i now wish to have no recollection of. but i really do feel privileged enough to be gainfully employed by the employer of my choice, what more in a job that pays decently, offers learning opportunities, and appears excitingly enough like the start of a proper career progression. never mind my rookie status just yet. i know i am satisifed enough. i have to be. working for an online news portal necessarily entails the need to learn the technical know-hows of gathering, culling and uploading assorted materials. this was dampening at first, because it made me feel more like an administrative clerk than a roving reporter. yet, it too was enlightening for having put my ideals and preconceived notions in perspective. for far too long have i dreamt, perhaps erroneously, of the role of a journalist as a constantly-roving adrenaline junkie keeping tabs on the quirks and sensibilities of life. that may not entirely be a false rosy ideal, but i'm slowly seeing the larger picture within which the more unenviable chores come attached. regardless, i am grateful and happy for this large chunk of an opportunity i've managed to grab to meaningully begin the year with. as with all new environments, this needs getting used to, and i was momentarily reminded of my first day in tekong on my first day of work, what with the discomfort of not knowing anyone and being positioned at the very bottom of the chain. but what is discomfort? it is but a part of a rite of passage that should eventually translate into better days as the comfort of familiarity slowly sets in. the wait can get excruciating, yet it is an unavoidable process that will invariably pay off in time to come. i know it should. experience has proved i'm not a socially inept moron. i hope. meanwhile, to hasten that process, i will allow my enthusiasm to overflow, much like inexhaustible OG leaders at orientation camps. but it will not be an act of pretension, just compliance. the stakes are higher this time round, not because a scholarship is dangled, but because my interest in journalism is the closest thing that has come to a 'passion' in my twenty years of life. there i said it - a scholarship is dangled. i am telling myself, not to allow myself to feel disgraced should an unfavourable assessment be made against me in six months to come, because i know i definitely would have given my all. if that should be deemed insufficient, i will merely be disappointed, not dejected. whether i will persue the career path of a journalist post-tertiary-studies is another issue altogether. perhaps the most sensible thing now would be to go sleep and recharge for tomorrow's maybe interesting, but surely fruitful day in the newsroom. to abort the plan of expressing disgust over jack neo and the gross farce of his telemovie-like movies. yes i shall do just that. and remember, there is no hard and fast rule that stipulates mandarin comedy viewing as a requisite for the mandatory CNY movie trip. your safest bet last year was juno. this year, it surely is doubt. good night! |
