back from india, with precious memories of third world chaotic beauty, readily dispensable memories of mundane live firings, a slightly messed up conscience and multiple infected skin sores here there, everywhere.

really, the experience wasn't nearly as harrowing as 2007's australia month-long stonefest. that despite the unrelenting 40 degrees temperature, dried up taps and droves of commando houseflies that thrive by squatting eternally on my every wound and sore. short-lived unsanitized chaos beats month-long unflinching monotony. yay.

ever passed someone off as being pretentiously atas when they proudly proclaim a third world country as being "one of the most beautiful countries in the world" with "such a rich, brimming culture with beautiful people", or something somewhere along that line? an exaggerated overstatement that is, but still, such statements, i realize, shouldn't be ridiculed as utter bullshit. cos really, there can be as much intolerant contempt as there are enlightening culture-clashing surprises that is to be found in the amusing, exotic sight of cows, humans and trucks gleefully criss-crossing into one another's path on the public roads with zero regard for traffic conduct. seeing not a single living thing or vehicle get injured or damaged in such royal traffic mayhem almost makes a mockery out of singapore's safety-obsessed traffic culture. it doesn't make sense that fat buffalos can dash against the flow of mad indian traffic and end up unscathed, while taxi passengers that alight along random buildings in the CBD jeopardize the safety of fellow commuters, does it?

don't get me wrong. that is not to condescend the beauty of nicely laid out tar roads or the practicality of traffic regulations. it is merely a realization that there is beauty to be found in chaotic, multi-directional single lane roads, as there is atypical, rustic charm that exudes from the coarse, unrefined and inelegant landscapes of india. sure, singaporeans (more like exhausted, comfort-craving conscripts) get complainy along the dusty streets of delhi, but at the end of the day, all would agree that it was an eye-opening trip (that was well-worth the painful infected sore on my toes, not. ya. go on, roll your eyes, call me schizophrenic as i oscillate between artsy traveller mood and whiney conscript mood)

and the issue of a messed-up conscience. well, another memorable sight of india besides the royal taj mahal and agra fort juxtaposed with rows and rows of tattered slums and buildings -- the unrelenting, aggressive street hawkers everyone would love to mimic. you are almost tempted to wear a huge signboard that says "NO - I AM COMPLETELY UNINTERESTED IN THAT INFERIOR TAJ MAHAL MEMORABILIA THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SELL ME AT A PRICE THAT TOTALLY RIPS ME OFF" on your head as they approach you in droves the moment you innocently alight from the tour bus. that is until you realize that many of these hawkers, albeit wised up and irritatingly persistent, are young ones that wear innocent frowns and distant stares on their dirt-stained faces. it makes you feel guilty as charged for haggling just because everyone else is doing so. cos really, what pain is there in parting with a few dollars that is but a fraction of exorbitant purchases that we make back here in sg?

was physically maladjusted throughout. never in my life have i been reduced to a walking human fly bait, thanks to the pus filled sores on my toes, nose, ears and mouth. it was gooey pus galore for all to gawk at. and flies to stoop on. not a pretty sight. am immensely glad to be back in sanitized singapore. chaotic beauty is novel at first, then it gets interesting, and when the sores widen it gets dreary. never have clean white tiles felt so alluring in my entire life.

movie madness upon return. becoming jane was blah period romance, untraceable was closetted torture porn... and then came

, which is truly a magnificently deranged, wondrously demented, and beautifully bleak piece of shit. there was a deliberate and overt dearth of blood and gore, but that was exactly what the deal is about - to upset expectations by candycoating an anti-violence message with bloodless violence. haneke truly makes you wonder about gleeful voyuerism and makes a statement against the standard hollywood violent movie forumla by [SPOILER ALERT] showing almost no blood, killing all protaganists, and having characters directly mock the audience by breaking the fourth wall. real chilling. bravo. this is NOT your standard torture porn fare (i.e. not a saw/hostel variant) do catch it. this over that three kingdoms thing, please?
