and so, my perceivably very sick and twisted wish of catching my most anticipated 2007 horror film on the big screen finally realized on friday. albeit at the price of incurring the wrath of mariam seow and lgf, (LGF incidentally happens to be the abbrievation for Lionsgate Films, which is notorious for distributing what people these days call torture porn and splatter flicks) both unwilling victims of my undying persuasion and enthusiasm for all things morbid and twisted.

to call the film 'gruesome' would be a huge understatement. it is in fact the ultimate exercise in misogynistic sadism, or at least that is what the film presents itself as at its most superficial layer. whether the film succeeds in passing off as a dig at capitalism and the bush administration or coming across as just that, a misogynistic, excessively gory and sadism-filled cinematic trash is anyone's call, cos try as eli roth and his proponents might, the conservative camp will never be able to accept blood, guts and sadism in general as a medium for transmitting messages of any forms. which is not entirely unforgivable, admittedly, cos' the sight of a nude heather matarrazzo sliced and diced upside down for another nude old woman's orgasmic bloodbath is really... not for the weak-stomached.

the infamous bloodbath for the curious. you have been warned though!

this definitely classifies as the most barbaric and inhumane scenes i've ever seen in the history of the many gory films i've watched.

for good or bad, i don't know, hostel 2 is the first film that has managed to spawn a 45minutes discussion between me the hostel fanboy and mariam and gf, the two traumatized and outraged members of the audience. let me just address some issues here to clarify and affirm my sanity and humanity.

accusation: the perversely voyeuristic act of viewing the scenes of women being tortured in the cinemas is a worrying social phenomenon that points towards the desensitization of violence. (so gp)

does entertainment value necessarily stem from voyeurism or the act of women being tortured in itself? i'm more inclined to liken such issues to that of an accident scene - it's horrifying all the same, but you just can't look away. the obsession with all that excessive splatter onscreen? what cannot be sought in reality intrigues. what is beyond the moral boundaries which we are confined in, fascinates. it's not like i go to sleep every night only after i dream up a novel method of slaying women in captive. in other words, i will not, in subdued forms or not, put what i see onscreen into real-life action. to me, it's really just an extended interest and curiosity in the matters which are beyond the taboo markers we have set for ourselves and others in life.

right. does it sound like too much of a stretch? im trying my darn hardest to rationalize here. it is to assure people that i will not, out of sheer boredom, slice them up for a bloodbath someday, you know.

if you need further assurance, please also note that i watched another movie, blue gate crossing (蓝色大门), on the very same day, and loved it all the same. another commonplace taiwanese college melodrama which wow, involves a moody teenage love triangle! only that it stars guey lun mei as the self-confused, self-rejecting, almost self-loathing teenager, which really makes all the cliches instantly forgivable.

and on to the sodagreen concert on saturday.

it was truly a sentimental and heartfelt affair for sodagreen and theirs fans alike. interaction was for once, a truly conversational and candid affair, as qingfeng quipped about everything from encores being pretentious to ah fu's newfound japanese fling. haha. i guess we were all equally touched by the 30 odd songs the band invested so much emotion in performing, as well as the band's refreshing down-to-earth demaneour. i love my sodagreen!

some idiot actually had the audacity to shout “你很娘,可是你很可爱!” while qingfeng was well, prancing around doing his thing onstage. while that was a little too blatant for comfort, it was also that bit of insensitivity that led to qingfeng's best quotes that night. with much class and candidness thrown in, he retorted -

..to roaring applause from the audience. brilliant retort and inspiring statements made at the same time. how many people can pull that one off?!

i love the optimism conveyed in this song! though not always applicable to life, still, a nice listen.

till then!
